how to do animation in powerpoint

Introduction

How To Do Animation in PowerPoint Presentation contains 3 slides and we will only discuss the 3rd Slide in this post as the first two slides are a replication of the 3rd slide having fewer objects on them.

Slide 1

Shows only those object of the scene which has been drawn using Shape Tools. Slide 2 contains all the objects of Slide 1 including animated GIF files of Sheep and Goat. The girl on the 3rd slide is the main object for which I’m writing this post.

Figure 1.1

Figure 1.1 of Slide 3 is illustrating 4 huge circles at the bottom to which all the other objects of the slides have been grouped with. For instance, Object Houses and Tree are grouped with the 1st Circle, Stones, and Gress are grouped with the 2nd Circle, the 3rd Circle is grouped with Water, and Sun has been grouped with the 4th Circle.

Tip: You can easily hide objects from slides but still use them by applying No Fill and No Outline colors.

All the colored objects in Figure 1.1 indicates that they all are pictures.

About the Animation Effects Used

You can download the presentation from the link below and can check the Effect Option properties for each of the above Spin animations and how much Rotation, Smoothness, Repeat, Duration, and Delay Timings have been applied.

The Walking Girl Animation in PowerPoint

The main attraction point of this Presentation is the Walking Girl, which has been drawn using an Oval, Rounded Corner Rectangles, and FreeForm Shape. Look into the Selection Pane and you can notice that all the body parts of the girl, which are in motion have been drawn separately. Like Head, Shoulder, Left Hand, Right Hand, Body, Left Leg, and Right Leg.

#ListenMicrosoft – Even PowerPoint 2019 doesn’t support aplying different animations on Grouped objects.

If anyhow Microsoft will add this functionality to PowerPoint, where you can apply different animations to a grouped object then this update can really create unlimited animation #PossibilitiesWithPowerPoint.

Figure 1.2

In Figure 1.2, you can notice that 2 small ovals have been Highlighted in Red Rectangles. Each of the ovals has been grouped separately with one of the girl’s hands. Look into the Selection Pane and you can notice that Girl Left-Hand has been grouped with Oval 15 and Girl’s Right-Hand has been grouped with Oval 11. You don’t see these ovals during Slideshow as we hide them by applying No Fill and No Outline. We are using both of these ovals as Custom Anchor Points.

#ListenMicrosoft – These small ovals have been grouped with the hands to create Custom Anchor Points and that is another basic element of Animation which is still missing in even PowerPoint 2019.

It is like a Graphics Designer using Adobe illustrator or CorelDraw without Anchor Points.

What Custom Anchor Points are used for?

Look into Figure 1.3, you can notice that we applied the Spin effect to both of the Girl’s hands. As explained earlier that the Girl character has been drawn using Shape Tools and so the hands are Custom FreeForm shapes.

Figure 1.3

Each of the Girl’s body parts is separately in Motion and both the hands are rotating at 85 Degree Clockwise and Counter-Clockwise respectively at the same time. So, what will happen if I don’t use these small ovals to define custom anchor points for hands? See Figure 1.4 where Custom Anchor Points have been defined by grouping small ovals with the hands.

Custom Anchor Points example
Figure 1.4

Now, take a look at Figure 1.5, where I am removing those small ovals and after that note down the rotation of the hands.

Object Rotation Without Anchor Point
Figure 1.5

After deleting the small oval used as an Anchor Point, the rotation of hands will change. If we will apply the Spin effect without setting the Custom Anchor Point then they will rotate as shown in Figure 1.5. We wanted to rotate the hands by having an Anchor Point near the shoulders of the girl as shown in Figure 1.4.

Now, let’s talk about the rest of the animations applied to the Girl character as shown in Figure 1.2.
